My sincerest apologies to anybody who has e-mailed me and gotten no 
response.  For exactly five months, I needed a break from FAQ writing.  
I have been flooded with more emails than I can handle, but now they 
have finally stopped, and I feel like I can resume working on this FAQ.
However, I want to make it INCREDIBLY clear that I do NOT want to 
receive emails asking questions which have been answered in this FAQ. 
Once I start receiving too many random emails asking questions which 
have been answered, I will stop this FAQ again.

Do you have what it takes to become a Ranch Master???

This is a RPG game recently made by Natsume for the GameBoy, GameBoy 
Pocket, and the GameBoy Color.  This game requires a great deal of 
patience as well as discipline.  Basic math skills are also helpful.  
The difference between the three is that the on the GBC the game is in 
color.  In the game, your dead grandfather comes to you in your sleep 
and tells you that his ranch has become ignored and overgrown.  He wants 
you to go to his ranch and turn things around by clearing the land, 
planting crops, and buying livestock.

Goal: to become a Ranch Master! :-)

Requirements to become a Ranch Master:
  1) Eaten at least 6 Berry of Power Trees (apples)
  2) Own four cows
  3) Own four chickens
  4) Have an Ultra-Deluxe house
  5) 66,000 G
  6) Have your happiness rate over 250
  7) Hoed and have things growing on at least 1,600 squares of field
  8) Shipped at least 4,500 units

Controls:

  + Pad: Use to control your character. Use to choose how many items to 
buy and switch menu options. Use to toggle whether or not to buy

  Select: Push once to pause the game. Push again to view menu.

1) Differences (Between many things)

Between SNES Version and GBC Version:

WARNING TO ALL HARVEST MOON SNES VERSION LOVERS: There are significant 
differences between the SNES and the GBC versions. The games are NOT the 
same!
 One major difference is that you cannot marry in the GBC version, which 
I think bites the dust, but what can I do? Another difference is that 
the spa is located in your shed basement to the right.  The mountain is 
gone in the GBC version. In the GBC version you can only have four cows 
and four chickens when in the SNES version, you can have 12 of each. In 
the GBC version, you can plant crops in Fall an Winter, as well as 
Spring and Summer. You cannot plant seeds in Fall and Winter in the SNES 
version. It is extremely easy to get the highest amount of money you can 
have in the GBC version (99,999), while it is EXTREMELY TOUGH in the 
SNES version (999,999). The gameplay is about the same. The ability to 
control your character is the same. In the GBC version, you can choose 
what gender you are and what pet you have (dog or cat). You cannot do 
either of these in the SNES version. You cannot walk around and meet 
people in the town in the GBC version.

Between Gender:
 
Need I say more???  Anyway, as a girl, you start out with potaoe seeds, 
turnip seeds, and grass seeds. Also, you can get the saddlebags and 
sprinkler faster if you choose to be a girl.  Weather does not harm your 
fence.

Between Pets:

If you have a dog, wild dogs will come to break your 
fence and kill your chickens. There are no moles if you have a dog. If 
you choose to have a cat, there are no wild dogs, but there are moles.

2) Characters:

  
  Nina: The town florist. She lives in the Flower Shop. She will sell 
you all the seeds you need.
  
  Eve: She lives in the Bar. She will sell you juices, some of which 
take home, some of which you drink there.
  
  Carpenter: He lives in the Carpenter Shop. You buy spare wood here. 
Wood costs 500 G for 50 pieces. You can also hire him to expand your 
house when you have enough wood and money. You can expand your house 
twice. For the first time, the requirements are: 5,000 G and 250 wood.  
For the second time, the requirements are: 10,000 G and 500 wood. 
  
  Maria: She lives in the Church. She will allow you to pray and she 
will tell you your fortune for free.
  
  Ann: She lives in the Tool Shop. She will sell you tools such as the 
sprinkler, butter and cheese maker, milker, and brush.
  
  Ellen: She lives in the Restaurant. She will sell you foods, some of 
which you take home, some of which you eat there.
  
  Livestock Dealer: He lives in the Animal Shop. He will sell you cows, 
chickens, chicken feed, cow feed, cow medicine, cow vaccine and miracle 
potion. You can also sell him the cows and chickens that you don't want.
  
  Harvest Sprites: These "dwarfs" live under the shed in the cave. Make 
sure you give them mushrooms every day. When you turn on the timer 
function, the Harvest Sprites will take care of your ranch for free, IF 
you give them mushrooms everyday. After the earthquake, one of the 
Harvest Sprites will be trapped under some rocks. They will really work 
hard for you, IF you free the Sprite by breaking the rocks with your 
hammer.
  
  The Ranch Spirit: He is also your grandfather. At the end of each year 
he will return to you in your sleep to evaluate the work you did that 
year. If you worked hard enough, he will give you gifts such as the 
pickax, umbrella, and fishing rod. If he thinks you needed to work 
harder, he will expand your ranch, and tell you to work harder.

3) Items:

 Axe: Use to chop wood material. Takes six hits to chop without using 
the + pad. You start with this.

 Hammer: Use to break large boulders, broken fences, small boulders. 
Large boulders take six hits to break without using the + pad. You start 
with this.

 Hoe: Use to plow your field. You must plow your field to plant crops. 
Every time you use it is one square plowed. You start with this.

 Sickle: Use to mow grass (the weeds that are on your field to start do 
not count as grass, it is not worth the stamina to cut the weeds when 
you can pick them up and throw them down again to get rid of them). 
Every time you use it is one square of grass mowed. Grass must be dark 
green to mow. You start with the sickle.

 Golden Axe: After the earthquake, go to the northern room of the cave 
and go to the tip of the point between the two pillars and throw the axe 
in the water. The Harvest Goddess come down and ask if you dropped this 
golden axe. Say NO, and you will have the golden axe which can chop wood 
in one hit.

 Golden Hammer: Sometime during the first year, the carpenter will come 
to your ranch and ask you if he can borrow your hammer. If you say Yes, 
the golden hammer is yours. If you say NO, you can only dream about the 
golden hammer. You can break large boulders in one hit with the golden 
hammer.

 Golden Sickle: After you give the Harvest Sprites 30 mushrooms, talk to 
them and they will ask you how your sickle is working. Answer by 
choosing the statement which says the sickle is working very well. He 
will talk some more and say it will take 12 hours to complete (not 12 
Harvest Moon hours, 12 real hours). The golden sickle can mow a 3x3 area 
of grass.

 Golden Hoe: After the golden sickle is completed, talk to the Harvest 
Sprites. He will ask you how the hoe is working. Say that the hoe is 
working great. He will talk some more and say that he will make it 
better. It will take 24 real hours for the golden hoe to be completed. 
The golden hoe can plow a row of 6 squares at a time.

 Watering Can: You use this to water your crops except grass which 
doesn't need watering. It can water one square at a time. You get this 
when you buy your first bag of seeds from the flower shop.

 Saddlebags: When your horse becomes big you can buy saddlebags for the 
horse so that you can ship items through your horse and not through the 
shipping box. You buy these from the tool shop for 2,500 G.

 Cow Feed: You use this to feed your cows, but it is much cheaper to 
feed them mowed grass instead. There are 12 feedings per bag. It costs 
700 G.

 Chicken Feed: Same as cows. It costs 500 G (I don't know why there is a 
price difference, so please don't ask me unless you can figure it out).

 Milker: Use to milk your mature cows. It costs 1800 G.

 Sprinkler: An upgraded watering can. It can water a 3x3 area. You buy 
it from the tool shop around the 18th of Spring of the first year. It 
costs 2000 G.

 Cow Brush: Buy this from the tool shop anytime. Use it to brush your 
cows to make them happy. It costs 800 G.

 Cow Bell: Use this to call your cows. You basically have no need for 
it. You get it free when you buy your first cow.

 Cow Medicine: Use it to cure a sick cow. If you take good care of your 
cows, you'll never use it but is a good idea to have all the time 
anyway. It costs 1000 G

 Miracle Potion: Used to make a mature cow pregnant. It takes 21 days 
for the baby cow to be born. Breeding a cow increases your happiness 
score. It costs 4000 G.

 Umbrella: A gift from your grandfather if you worked hard enough. Using 
it causes the weather to rain so you water all your crops at once.

 Fishing Pole: Used to catch fish which are a hefty sum of money. You 
fish in the upper room of the cave and to the right where the sign is. 
This too is a gift from your grandfather.

 Pickaxe: You use it in the right room of the cave only. You can break 
the pillars in one hit. This is also a gift from your grandfather.
 
 Vaccine: Also called "Cow First Aid Kit". Use to prevent cows from 
getting sick for a full season. It costs 2000 G.

 Potatoe Seeds: You buy these from the florist in Spring. These are non-
renewable crops which means that once you harvest the potatoes, you must 
buy more potatoe seeds. Potatoes sell for 80 G a piece and can be 
harvested six days after planting (you have to water them every day 
until they're ready for harvesting). The seeds cost 150 G for one bag. 
Never plant in any season but Spring and never plant after the 25 of 
Spring.

 Turnip Seeds: You buy these from the florist in Spring also. These too 
are non-renewable crops. Turnips sell for 60 G a piece and can be 
harvested four days after they are planted (with watering every day of 
course).  It costs 120 G per bag. Never plant in any season but Spring, 
and never plant after the 25.

 Corn Seeds: You buy these seeds from the florist in Summer. These are 
renewable crops which means that you can keep watering the crops after 
you harvest them and keep growing corn. Corn sells for 120G and can be 
harvested thirteen days after they are planted (with watering every 
day). One bag of corn costs 300 G. Plant these seeds in Summer only and 
never plant after the 16.

 Tomato Seeds: You buy these seeds from the florist in Summer. These are 
renewable crops also. Tomatoes sell for 100 G a piece and can be 
harvested 9 days after they are planted (with watering every day). One 
bag of tomato seeds costs 200 G. Always plant these seeds in Summer and 
never plant these seeds after the 20.

 Peanut Seeds: You can buy these seeds from the florist in the Fall. 
These are non-renewable crops. Peanuts sell for 60 G a piece and can be 
harvested 7 days after they are planted (watering). One bag of peanut 
seeds costs 200 G. Peanuts must always be planted in the fall and never 
planted after the 22.

 Eggplant Seeds: You can buy these seeds from the florist in Fall. These 
too are non-renewable crops. Eggplants sell for 60 G a piece and can be 
harvested 5 days after they are planted (watering). One bag of eggplant 
seeds costs 150 G. Eggplants must always be planted in the Fall and 
never planted after the 24.

 Carrot Seeds: You can buy these seeds from the florist in Winter. These 
too are non-renewable crops. Carrots sell for 120 G a piece and can be 
harvested 7 days after they are planted (watering). Carrot seeds cost 
300 G per bag.  Carrots must always be planted in Winter and never 
planted after the 22.

 Broccoli Seeds: You can buy these crops from the florist in winter. 
These crops are renewable. Broccoli sells for 120 G a piece and can be 
harvested 11 days after they are planted (watering). Broccoli seeds cost 
500 G per bag. Broccoli must be planted in Winter and no later than the 
18.

NOTE: IF YOU START YOUR NAME WITH A CAPITAL LETTER YOU WILL BE ABLE TO 
PLANT EGGPLANTS AND CARROTS. IF YOU START YOUR NAME WITH A LOWERCASE 
LETTER YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PLANT PEANUTS AND BROCCOLI. IF YOU START YOUR 
NAME WITH A SYMBOL SUCH AS A HEART, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PLANT ALL FOUR 
TYPES OF SEEDS.

Grass Seeds: You can buy these seeds from the florist from the beginning 
of Spring until the end of Fall. You can plant these seeds any time, but 
they will not grow until Spring if they are planted in Winter. Mow grass 
when it is ready with the sickle. The mowed grass automatically goes to 
the silo where you can feed your livestock with it. One bag of grass 
seeds costs 500 G.

ALL SEEDS SPREAD A 3x3 AREA. 

 Butter Maker: You buy this from the tool shop sometime during the 
second year. It turns your cows milk in to butter which is worth 500 G. 
It costs 30,000 G.

 Cheese Maker: Exactly the same as the butter maker.

 Croissants: Buy these from the restaurant. They are used to recover 
stamina and are eaten during meal times (6 A.M., Noon, 6 P.M.). It costs 
300 G for 10 croissants.

 Meat Dumpling: Buy these from the restaurant. They are used to recover 
stamina and are eaten during meal times. It costs 200 G for ten meat 
dumplings.

 Rice Balls: Buy these from the restaurant. They are used to recover 
stamina and are eaten during meal times. It costs 100 G for 10 rice 
balls.

 Lunch Box: Buy this from the restaurant. It is used to recover stamina 
and is eaten when you buy it. It costs G for one.

 Cake: Buy this from the restaurant. It is used to recover stamina and 
is eaten when you buy it. It costs 500 G for one.

 Orange Juice: Buy this from the bar. It is used for recovery of stamina 
and is drinken when you buy it. It costs G for one cup.

 Apple Juice: Buy this from the bar. It is used for recovery of stamina 
and is drinken when you buy it. It costs G for one cup.

 Wild Grape Juice: Buy this from the bar. It is used for recovery of 
stamina and is drinken during meal times. It costs 300 G for 10 cups.

 Green Tea: Buy this from the bar. It is used for recovery of stamina 
and is drinken during meal times. It costs 200 G for 10 cups.

 Milk: Buy this from the bar when you have a cow that produces milk. It 
is used for recovery of stamina and is drinken during meal times. It 
costs 100 G for 10 cups.

 Golden Hen: According to rumor, there is a golden hen that layed a 
golden egg in the ranch center. I have not been able to confirm this 
rumor because I do not have any friends who own this game. The golden 
egg can be sold for 10,000 G.

 Cow: Buy from the Livestock Dealer for 5,000 G.

 Chicken: Buy from the Livestock Dealer for 500 G.

5) Animals

 Foxes- They just run across the screen. Ignore them.

 Frogs- When you mow grass, every once in a while, a frog that was 
hiding in the grass will hop away. Just ignore them.

 Birds- Sometimes in the morning, there will be three birds outside your 
house. When you walk outside, they fly away. Ignore them.

 Horse- You find this. When it grows big, you can buy saddlebags for the 
horse. You ship items through the saddlebags. The horse is very useful.

 Cat/Dog- You start out with this pet. If you have a friend who has a 
cat and you have a dog, you can trade your cat for his/her dog with the 
GameLink cable. Or you can have a cat and a dog if you trade something 
like seeds for the dog.

 Chickens- Buy these from the Livestock Dealer. They cost 500 G. If you 
feed them every day, they will lay eggs which can be sold for 70 G.

 Cows- Buy these from the Livestock Dealer for 5,000 G. If you feed and 
brush them daily, they will eventually produce milk. You should also 
take outside for a walk every once and a while.

 Moles- These things are PESTS! They eat your grass and crops and scare 
the crap out of your livestock! There is no way to get rid of them other 
than having a dog! You find them every once in a while when you are 
plowing your fields.

 Squirrels- They just run across the screen. Ignore them.

6) Shippable Items
 
Potatoes- Potatoes can be shipped for 80 G in the Spring time

Turnips- Turnips can be shipped for 60 G in the Spring time

Corn- Corn be shipped for 120 G in the Summer

Tomatoes- Tomatoes can be shipped for 100 G in the Summer

Peanuts- Peanuts can be shipped for 60 G in the Fall

Eggplants- Eggplants can be shipped for 60 G in the Fall

Carrots- Carrots can be shipped for 120 G in the Winter

Broccoli- Broccoli can be shipped for 120 G in the Winter

Eggs- Eggs can be shipped for 70 G

Milk- Milk can be shipped for 150 G (small), 250 G (medium), and 350 G 
(large)

Cheese- Cheese can be shipped for 300 G (when made with a small milk), 
400 G (when made with medium milk), and 500 G (when made with a large 
milk)

Butter- Butter can be shipped for 300 G (when made with small milk), 400 
G (when made with medium milk), and 500 G (when made with a large milk)

Mushrooms- Mushrooms can be shipped for 200 G

Fish- Fish can be shipped for 300 G.

7) Locations of Power Berries

1. Give 3 mushrooms to the Harvest Sprites
2. Plow your land

9. Use the Pickax between the two lanterns six times without touching 
the D-pad in the left cave, then use the Pickax to break the rocks in 
the next room. Aim for the upper-right corne.

8) Rumors

In the Ranch Center, there is a Golden Hen that lays a golden egg.
You must trade an adult hen with a friend. Keep doing this. There is a 
1/64 chance of the chicken you are trading will turn into the golden 
hen, which can be sold for 10,000 G.

I know the answer to the rumor about the baby cow in two days trick:
IT DOES NOT WORK. Don't waste your money.

The Livestock Dealer DOES have the Vaccine! It looks just like regular 
medicine. You must be in your 2nd year.

9) Glitches 

Although there fewer glitches in the GBC version than in the SNES 
version, there are still a few glitches that will probably exist in 
every game.

Text Glitch
Sometimes the text will be mixed up when someone is speaking to you. 
This glitch will not interfere with gameplay much, but is still 
annoying.

Too Slow Glitch
When you are with your cows, sometimes the character will suddenly 
change from moving fast to moving incredibly slow. This is another 
really annoying glitch in the game.

Soggy Mushrooms
When you have the watering can, run out of water and go into the main 
cave (the cave with mushrooms). Go next to a mushroom and use the 
watering can. It will be immediately refilled!

Harvest Thiefs
When the Harvest Sprite asks if he can upgrade your sickle and hoe, he 
sometimes does not give them back, EVER. Simply (I know this is hard, I 
had to do it once) restart your game.

 In-Game Codes:
    
    Ranch Master Code:
       Do NOT press A, B, Select and Start at the same time at the Title 
Screen. You will restart your game with nothing special. Take my word 
for it. 
    
    Instant Eggs:
       You MUST NOT have the golden sickle for this. When you have a 
chicken, throw its egg into the wall above the Shipping Box. Cut the egg 
out of the wall with the sickle. Put it in the Shipping Box. Repeat the 
process until you can't get anymore eggs. You will have many eggs when 
you are done.
    
    Cows Grow Faster:
       When you buy a cow, start its name with a symbol such as a heart. 
It will grow much faster.

    Blessed Cow Code:
       Pray at the church 10 or more times everyday. Eventually, the 
Harvest Goddess will come to you and bless one of your cows, which will 
never be unhappy again and automatically produce large milk, if it 
doesn't already.

    Free Seeds:
       When the game asks what gender you are, say girl, and you will 
start with 1 bag of turnips, 1 bag of potatoes, one bag of grass, and 
the watering can (I'm not sure about this). You can also get the 
sprinkler earlier too.
    
    Free $$$:
       When you start the game, look in the drawer right next to your 
bed for a free $1,000!
