You know that to be the best fighter you will need to be well versed in not just one style, many Do you have what it takes to enter the world's ultimate proving ground, The Octagon ? If so, be ready to face some of the world's toughest and most skilled fighters. You'll have to train hard and keep a clear mind, otherwise you'll find yourself tapping out, or even worse, knocked out. In this game, one mistake is all it takes to let your opponent go from the receiving ebd of your fist to snatching the victory from under your nose. We at Crave Entertainment want to welcome you to the ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP. Good luck. (End Of Credits) It is now my turn to welcome you to this FAQ ! I will try my best to guide you throughout this very difficult, yet very intense and refreshing game that is Ultimate Fighting Championship for the Playstation game console. The game was released by Crave Entertainment in October 2000, without too much hype. It got a slow start on the shelves but I heard the sales for this game went up during the Christmas commercial boost. From my personal experience, I can say that this game did sell well during the holidays. Only one copy was left after I picked mine up. Enough talking, let's now get to the thick of things ! ------------------------ (II) Basic Controls (Please Note This game supports both analog control and vibration feedback.) These controls are the most basic actions you can do while playing the game. Directional Buttons = Fighter Movement & Blocking Analog Stick = Fighter Movement & Blocking Select Button = Not Used Start Button = Pauses the game / Brings up the Quit menu Square Button = Left Punch X Button = Left Kick Circle Button = Right Kick Triangle Button = Right Punch L1 = Not Used L2 = Not Used L3 = Not Used R1 = Not Used R2 = Not Used R3 = Not Used ------------------------ (III) Game Screen Description All game screens in Ultimate Fighting Championship have the same meters and timer on them. At the top of the screen: The names of both competitors with a life gauge underneath both of them. The Player 1 controlled character starts on the left of the Octagon and his life gauge is the one in the upper left corner. Your opponent's gauge is in the upper right corner and your foe starts the match at the right of the screen. At the bottom right corner of the screen: The time left in the current round. This can be changed in the Options for Exhibition Matches but for matches in the Tournament and Road to the championship modes, it is set to three 5 minutes round, which is also the default setting for the Exhibition Mode unless you change it. Pause Menu: Reached by pressing Start during gameplay. Options self explainatory. ------------------------ (IV) The Rules of The UFC Traditionally, the UFC have played by this very simple set of rules: No bitting No eye gouging No low blowing (They never enforce this one ) In the game, you cannot attempt for any of the above illegal moves, so no matter what, you will never be disqualified. There are three ways to achieve victory: A) By Knockout: Opponent's life bar is empty and THE LAST BIT OF LIFE IS TAKEN AWAY BY A STRAIGHT, PUNCH TO THE FACE. Any blocked strike that takes out the opponent's last bit of life left in the bar will cause the opponent to regain a little health. This is the hard way to win matches. Usually, the match never lasts long enough to reach a point where one of the fighters is near of being knocked out. B) By Submission: You put and COMPLETE a submission hold on the opponent. No matter how much health is left in the opponent's bar, if you can completely lock a submission hold on, it's an automatic tap out. Make sure the opponent doesn't reverse your hold and puts you in something even more devastating. This is the relatively easiest way to win, but it's also the cheap way the computer will use to beat you. Also, some fighters are very good grapplers and will evade most of your holds. More on that later. C) By the Judges Decision: When the three 5 minutes rounds are finished and a winner still haven't been decided, it's down to the judges to rule it out. They can give a win to either side or declare it a draw. They will decide the winner based on the fighter that scored the most points during the match. I never reached the end of a match decided by a the judges' decision, so I doesn't know how are the points awarded. But if it mirrors the real life UFC system, it is a 3 judges, 10 points system (Similar to boxing). The fighter that showed more aggresivity and that took the initiative in the fight gets more points. A draw have a different signification depending on which mode you are playing in. In the UFC Tournament mode, a draw eliminates both you and your opponent and so counts as a loss. In Road To The Championship mode, a draw counts as a succesful title defense. In a Multi-Player tournament, a draw causes a Do-Over. In Exhibition mode a draw is just a draw and counts as a moral win or a moral lost, depending on how big your ego is. ------------------------ (V) The Game Modes From the title screen, Press the Start button to display the main menu. Using the UP and Down buttons, select a mode and hit the X Button to confirm your choice. A) UFC TOURNAMENT MODE This mode is the first part of your quest for UFC superiority. This is an 8 man tournament. But before being entered in the Final 8, you must win a qualification match. If you win, you receive your pass to the tournament itself. This is under single elimination rules, so one lost and you are out of the running. Winning this mode allows you to use the winning character in the Road to the championship Mode. B) ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP MODE In this mode you must defend your UFC Tournament championship against up to 18 opponents in a non tournament, singles match basis. This mode can only be played using fighters that have won the UFC Tournament. Each time that you win this mode using a different UFC fighter, you will unlock point to improve your created fighters. C) CREATE FIGHTER MODE This is where you can create your own fighter. More on this section later. D) Multiplayer Tournament Same as UFC Tournament mode but for up to 8 human controlled players at a time. Also, the winner of this tournament DOES NOT get access to the Road to the championship mode. If you have enough friends and 2 multitaps adapters, this might be the most interesting mode. E) Exhibition Match One or Two Player mode, 2 fighters, one match, and that's all. Also, the time options and number of rounds can be edited in this mode. F) Big John's Training This mode lets you train with UFC Referee Big John McCarthy. All commands that you input are displayed on the screen and you can access your character's move list from the Pause Menu. Also from the Pause Menu, you can order Big John to get in a certain position to practice specific moves. After you select your fighter, you can edit Big John's skill level. If you want Big John to just stand there and take the pain you deliver without firing back, take the Skill Level indicator all the way to the left. The more you take the Skill Level to the right, the more aggressive will be Big John. ------------------------ (VI) The Option Mode This is accessed from the main menu. Under Game Options: A) Match Configuration Sets the number of rounds for the Exhibition Matches B) Minutes Adjusts the amount of time each round will last in Exhibition Matches Other Options: Vibration - Turns the vibration feedback on and off on your controller. Fighter's Demo - Allows you to show the fighter's entrance routine before a fight. Audio Balance Adjust the level of the sound effects and music (Sadly, there's no way to turn the crowd off ) Sound Stereo Or Monaural Audio Output System Data Save and loads UFC System Files (Options) ------------------------ (VII) Advanced Controls The moves and holds in the game can be divided in 2 : Both Opponent standing or one fighter down, the other on top of him. All fighters have different moves and holds but all of them have moves assigned to the following commands. (When you are on top of grounded opponent) Square + Triangle (Performs an hold) R1 (Stand Up) ------------------------ (When you are under the opponent, your back to the ground) Square + Triangle (Change Position) X + Circle (Counter Hold) Left + Right + Left + Right again and again (Escape or get in to the Guarded Position) Square + X (Grab opponent's punch) ------------------------ (When you are under the opponent, on your hands and knees) Triangle (Back Punch Opponent) Left + Right + Left + Right again and again (Escape position) ------------------------ (Both Opponent Standing) Up + Square + Triangle (Grab Punch) Down + Square + Triangle (Grab Kick) X + Circle (Tackles Opponents / Counter Opponent's tackle) ------------------------ (IIX) Fighter Profiles Mark "The Hammer" Coleman Age: 35 Date Of Birth: 12/20/64 Height: 6'1" Weight: 240 Lbs. If you fight a grappler (Coleman,Burnett,Goodridge,Rutten,Rizzo,Jackson,Randleman,Hughes,Kosa ka, Mezger, Ortiz, Miletich, Horn, Ruas, Williams, Shamrock or Tanner) fight using a lot of strikes and get back up to your feet as soon as you can after being took down. If you fight a striker (The fighters not mentioned above), take them down to the ground and mat grapple them. 2) If you control a good grappler, take the opponent down as soon as possible. Basically, the first move you should try is the tackle for the takedown. Especially good when using Coleman, Ruas and Shamrock 3) If you find yourself stuck on the ground with your back to the opponent, don't lose time trying to back punch the opponent. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU GET OUT OF THAT POSITION ASAP. Each blow your opponent will give you to the back of the head is devastating. 4) On the other hand, if you find yourself on top of an opponent facing the ground, just hit the punch button repeatedly, this is a sure Knock Out. 5) When practicing with Big John, Start with his skill level at the lowest and find all your moves using the move list provided in the Pause Menu. Then practice each of your moves in all position to the point that you doesn't need to look at the list anymore. Then, get his skill level to the middle of the gauge. Now, if you can defeat Big John, you can go in the main mode without worrying 6) You should take one character and always keep it until you beat the game. 7) Fear the Brazilian squad. Ruas and chums are all deadly. Getting into a ground war with them is suicidal. 8) Mark Coleman is very good to take you down. 9) The best all around characters to pick are Marco Ruas, Mark Coleman and Frank Shamrock 10) Don't get into a pattern of doing the same moves over and over again. The opponent will adjust. ------------------------ (X) Move Lists Table Of Contents A)Base Move List (Common to all fighters) B)Tim Lajcik C)Mark Coleman ------------------------ A)Base Move List The following is a list of the moves that all the fighters in the game use. If I doesn't know the answer, then I will ask to anybody who knows the answer to let me know. I will give full credits to people who give me informations. Q : In training mode, I notice that every fighter's move list has a grab-chokehold when the opponent is groggy, but how do I get my opponent groggy? I thought it was when I hit him on the head and he falls on his butt, but when I try to do the chokehold then, it didn't work and I only got an ordinary tackle. Can you explain this? A : No. I never was able to pull out a groggy move. Anybody that knows should mail me ! ----- Q: Why is it that sometimes when I block a submission hold, my character rolls on top of his opponent and sometimes he doesn't ? A : It depends on who you are fighting as and what is the hold you tried to block. There's also a little luck involved. ----- Q: Are there any real fighters as hidden characters? (eg Ken Shamrock, Royce Gracie) A : No. Sadly. ----- ------------------------ (XIII) Credits, Future Update & Next Game Worked On -Credits to the UFC and its fighters for their great show -Credits to Crave Entertainment and Opus to have created this game -Credits to Gamefaqs.Com to have published this FAQ -Credits to Cheat Code Central for some Hidden Characters Info -Thanks to my girlfriend Nasdja for her patience and understanding -Future updates for this FAQ will probably contain complete move lists for each fighter.
